Which countertop is right for you?
Ten honest questions about how you actually cook, how much maintenance you'll tolerate, and how long you're staying in the house. The answer is a primary recommendation and a close-second runner-up — with the tradeoff between them spelled out, not hidden. No email gate. No upsell.

Each answer scores points across five materials. Your top score wins.
How the quiz works
Each question scores points toward each of five materials (quartz, granite, marble, butcher block, soapstone) based on how that material actually performs against the trait the question is testing. Heat tolerance, stain resistance, sealing schedule, daily-use feel, resale weight, and aesthetic personality are all in the mix. After ten questions, the material with the highest score is your match — but we also show you the second-place finisher, because most kitchens have a real second choice and it's worth knowing what you're not picking.
This isn't gospel. It's a starting point that's right about 80% of the time for typical kitchens. For the close calls — and for the rest of the decisions inside the countertop decision (edge profile, fabricator, slab selection) — the buying guides and the side-by-side comparison go deeper.
The four next steps
A material recommendation is the first decision, not the last. Here's what comes after.
-
1Read the material hub
Every quiz result links to the deep-dive hub for that material — buying angle, slab selection, edge profiles, daily care, ten-year resale. Skim it before you walk a slab yard.
-
2Estimate your installed cost
Use the cost calculator with the material the quiz picked. The estimate is built on real fabricator quotes — walk into the showroom with a number you trust.
-
3Walk three slab yards
Two stock slabs of the same brand can look noticeably different. The slab yard is the only place to confirm before you sign. Get three quotes from three independent shops — at least one with its own yard.
-
4Ask the editors if the answer surprises you
If the quiz returned a material you weren't expecting — or you're torn between the winner and the runner-up — the contact form goes straight to our editors. We'll tell you what we'd do with your kitchen.
