Granite Care

The Real Granite Care Schedule

Granite is durable, but the right routine keeps it easy to live with and catches sealing problems early.

Updated · Reviewed by Reynaldo Carrasco

Clean daily, test sealer a few times per year, and reseal only when the water test says the stone needs it.

Daily and weekly

For daily cleaning, use mild soap or stone cleaner and dry the surface. Drying matters because it prevents mineral spots and streaks.

Weekly, clean around the sink, faucet base, cooktop, and seams more carefully. Those are the places where water, oil, and crumbs collect.

Monthly and yearly

  • Monthly: inspect caulk lines and seams.
  • Every few months: water-test high-use areas.
  • Yearly: reseal only if water darkens the stone quickly.
  • Any time: use a poultice for oil stains rather than aggressive scrubbing.

Do not overdo it

Granite does not need constant polish, wax, or sealer. Too many products can create haze and make the counter harder to clean.

A simple routine done consistently beats a cabinet full of specialty bottles.
